Essential offers three (3) diplomas in recognition of graduation:
General Diploma
Student must complete 24 high school credits that include:
- 4 English credits
- 4 Math credits (to include Algebra I and Geometry)
- 4 Science credits
- 4 Social Studies credits
- 1 Physical Education credit
- 1/2 Health credit
- 1 Life Skills credit (can be met through Fine Arts or Foreign Language)
- 5 1/2 Electives (to complete the 24 credit minimum)
Advanced Diploma
Student must complete all the requirements of the General Diploma in addition to:
- 1 Algebra II credit (applied as a Math credit)
- 2 Foreign Language credits (applied as Elective credits)
Individualized Diploma
Students who are unable to complete high school level work in one or more subject areas are eligible to apply for an Individualized Diploma. Parents must submit an Individualized Diploma Worksheet for approval by the school administration. Students will complete an individualized education plan for graduation recognition which will follow the same pattern as the general diploma, but adapt to the student’s abilities.
What is a credit?
For the Alabama public school system, a credit is defined as 140 hours of study in a subject, and 1/2 credit is defined as 70 hours of study. Typically, 1 credit is equal to a full school year of study, and 1/2 credit is equal to a semester of study. Some curriculum will designate high school credits earned upon completion of the text or program.
How to Report Credits
Please use our online form to input your student’s high school credit achievements. This form insures that you include all the necessary information. Click here to go directly to form now.
Parents are encouraged to use the transcript form available online and submit the credits annually, especially in preparation for college applications and admittance. Families who choose to pursue Essential’s diploma will receive friendly reminders each summer regarding credit reporting for their high school students.
Independent Homeschool Transcript/Diploma
Essential families may choose to create and issue their own diplomas for graduation. Essential requires copies of the parent-issued transcript and diploma to verify that students have graduated and not simply withdrawn. This option will only be available to families who notify us of their decision at the start of their student’s high school studies (typically at 9th grade).*
PLEASE NOTE: Independent Transcripts/Diplomas CANNOT and are not permitted to list Essential Church School as the issuing agent. Any reference to Essential must state that Essential Church School kept records of attendance only.
