I was (very) recently appointed Chair of The Optimist Club of Birmingham’s 2026 Oratorical Contest and wanted to personally extend an invitation to your students to participate.
This year’s theme feels especially fitting for students whose learning experiences often connect home, family, and the wider world:
“The Moment I Realized I Belonged – My Definition of Community.”
Homeschooled students frequently develop a unique perspective on community — one shaped by family, co-ops, service, faith groups, activities, and friendships across many settings. This contest is designed to give students a welcoming and respectful space to share their experiences and their own voice.
Speech Length: 4–5 minutes
Eligibility: Students under age 19 as of October 1, 2025 and not enrolled as a degree-seeking post-secondary student
Entry Deadline: Wednesday, February 25, 2026
Contest Date & Time: Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.
Location: St. Bernadette Hall, Our Lady of Lourdes Church
Please note participation is limited to the first twenty (20) completed entries received.
Students may enter by submitting the completed Entry Form (attached) to:
Ryan Adams
3501 Independence Drive
Birmingham, AL 35209
—or by email to ryan@birminghamrealtors.com
On the day of the contest, students should bring an extra copy of their speech and a copy of their birth certificate solely for age verification purposes.
I would be grateful if you could share this opportunity with any interested families. The goal is simply to provide students a supportive platform to think, speak, and be heard.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions, and thank you for all you do to support your students’ growth and confidence.
